COURSE PREREQUISITES & CO-REQUISITES
Many courses at Contra Costa College have prerequisites. In cases where a prerequisite is required, you must have completed certain coursework or possess certain knowledge or skill before you will be allowed to enroll in the class. You will be blocked from enrolling in classes that have a prerequisite requirement until either 1) you complete the prerequisite; 2) the prerequisite is waived; or 2) you successfully challenge the prerequisite.
A co-requisite is a class that must be taken at the same time as a class with the co-requisite requirement. Generally it means that related material is taught in both classes, necessitating they be taken together.
Request for Waiver of Prerequisite
If you have already completed the prerequisite or an equivalent at another institution, you can request that it be waived. Submit a Request for Waiver of Prerequisite to the Admissions & Records Office. An official transcript is required to prove you completed the prerequisite course.
Challenging a Prerequisite or Co-requisite
If you haven’t satisfied the prerequisite for a course but still feel you could succeed, you may challenge the prerequisite.
Contact the Counseling Center in SSC-108 to explore this option.
Reasons for a Challenge:
You may challenge a prerequisite because:
a. The prerequisite course is not reasonably available.
b. The prerequisite is discriminatory or is being applied in a
discriminatory manner.
You will be allowed to enroll in the course while your challenge is being reviewed. If the challenge is denied, you will be notified and automatically dropped from the course.
To file a Prerequisite Challenge, you must meet with a
counselor. If your counselor approves your challenging the
prerequisite, you will be allowed to enroll in the course if space is available. You will be referred to the department that will administer the challenge exam. If you pass the exam, you will be allowed to remain in the course. If you fail the exam, the Admissions & Records Office will be notified by the department to drop you from the course.
