Biological Sciences The Biological Sciences Department supports the overall mission of Contra Costa College by offering a comprehensive set of courses that provides academically rigorous lower division or vocational preparation for Biology, Biotechnology, and various health-related majors. Additionally, we teach courses designed for non-science students transferring to four year colleges and universities, those seeking gainful employment, and individuals desiring life-long education. We strive to teach students to master defined subject areas within the Biological Sciences, as well as to think critically, evaluate data, and analyze and synthesize information. Studies in the biological sciences can lead to a wide variety of careers. In addition to the traditional areas of zoology, botany, microbiology, anatomy, and physiology, there are many subspecialties too, including ecology, phylogeny, demography, molecular biology, biochemistry, and biotechnology. Biology is also a natural starting point for those who want to go into medicine, nursing, pharmacology, or environmental science. Possible careers include: Anatomist, animal breeder, biochemist, biologist, ecologist, microbiologist, cytologist, geneticist, toxicologist, physiologist, health technologist, clinical laboratory research assistant, physician, dentist, veterinarian, occupational health and safety inspector, chiropractor, dietician, medical librarian, museum technician, oceanographer, podiatrist, soil scientist, taxidermist, medical technologist, and biotechnology technician.
